ANNOUNCEMENT: HVTD Downtime (Updated)

Posted by Matt Broughton on 04/25 at 03:52 PM

I will be bringing HVTD down for 4-6 hours Sunday April 25th starting at 11am for maintenance. It will be back online sometime that afternoon, 5pm at the latest hopefully with some new features.

Edit: Of the changes I had hoped to make, I managed to get two finished. At the bottom of the articles you create you will now see an “Edit” link beside “Author Options.” Following this link will let you make edits to your articles if you notice a typo or spelling mistake, enter the wrong category, etc.

The second change is the formatting of comments. I was hoping to improve the clarity of comments and get them to fit into the design a little better.  I think it worked, but I’ll let you be the judge of that.

I also attempted to enable posting of photos to stories with an interface, but there were a few bugs in my code that I need to fix before they will work properly. I’ll see if I can get this enabled sometime in the next week.

As always, if you run into problems or find any errors please let me know.  Thanks!

Matt, does this mean you are cutting church?
Just kidding, you gotta work on the site whenever you find the time. We all appreciate what you are doing.
One of the biggest improvements, one that I personally requested to Doug, has been made in the photo gallery. I complained about the dark background making reading so difficult for some of us. So now you’ve replaced the dark green background for white! That’s really great.
My wish to Santa is for you to add the ability to post photos within posts in time for me to review The Taste of Hartsville on May 20. I enjoyed doing that last year and want to do it again.

Jimmy, I am working on the ability to add photos to posts from the post creation form. The photo will go straight to the photo gallery and also be shown in the post itself. I’ve run into a few bugs with the code I had, but I’m working on getting this up and working!

One thing I would like to see for posts about certain events if you could put a date for the post to be deleted from the forum. I’m sure folks visiting the site are not impressed with posts about Christmas events upcoming still showing up in April. I think the improvements are making the site more user friendly though. Keep up the good work!

Posts are never deleted from HVTD. To my knowledge they were never removed from the old version either.

Well just trying to make suggestions, just becuase it wasn’t done on old site doesn’t make it it a good thing. I’ll just go back to the loft.

Russell, I do appreciate all the suggestions we get, I apologize if my response made it seem like we didn’t.

I do recognize that there is a lot of old content on the front page and this is simply from lack of turnover. In some of the slower categories there isn’t much posted.

I am exploring different ways of organizing the front page to make it easier to read as well as to highlight the more recent posts. The problem comes from the fact that if I sort by date it leaves some categories totally empty…which is never a good thing on a front page.

Hopefully we can come up with a solution to this soon, and if you’ve got any ideas I’d love to hear them!

Keep it up Matt. Love the little speech balloon thingies on the comments. Funny how little details can make a site more appealing.
