Blacktop vs. Green Space

Posted by John on 01/25 at 08:28 AM

Not long ago the city replaced some green space and spent gobs of money building a road through the middle of Byerly Park.  More recently, the city has installed traffic control gates at either end of that road.  Now we have locked gates preventing access to that road.

That is what I call good planning.  While it may have been cheaper to leave the green space and plant some shrubs, the road with the locked gates is much more attractive.  The stop signs hanging from those gates is a nice added touch for those that think they can drive through a locked gate.

Mayor Pennington says:

John,

Just wanted to clarify your post. We decided to close the gates temporarily to see if it has an impact on crime in the far end of the parking lot.  This is certainly not a permanent solution.

You are a fair and smart man—especially when it comes to your passion for recreation.  We could certainly use your passion for improving the parks.  Bringing light to the negative aspects of the park only takes away from your love of what parks and recreation stand for.

Please feel free to call me directly with questions or ideas.  I can certainly help make positive change happen faster than posting it here.

We need your help to make this place better.

Your friend,

Mel Pennington
