Comment by Churchgoer Re: therealist or theidealest

Ideally HVTD could return to the glorious past but Dave has said the reality is that that is not going to happen with the new software.  I think therealist needs to get over it, go fishing, or create a new website like the old website.  If you dont like trunk or treat, make a post and it will disappear.

I had a good friend that always referred to herself as a realist.  She thought the bible was a fairy-tale and she believed in revolution.  Good friend but a real moron.  I believe god created everything.

The car is no longer overheating and I dont lose anymore sleep thinking about it.  Still might move to find a better job but that would be sad because people are so friendly here in Hartsville.

Someone explain to me what this has to do with Professional Sports???!!?

Churchgoer, try picking the correct topic for your posts. You may find that the people of Hartsville aren’t as friendly as you think.

She believed in revolution? Do you mean overthrowing dictatorships, or did you mean Evolution, the theory that animals change over time and adapt to their environment? And why is she a moron? Because she doesn’t believe in a mythology written down by men to explain the workings of unknown forces? If you truly believe one day there was nothing, and a week later there existed a universe and galaxies and a planet here with all the oceans and animals and just two people that subsequently gave birth to everyone over the last six thousand years, sir, you are the moron.

The vikings have a myth that the God Loki, who was somewhat like Johnny Knoxville and generally regarded as a pain in the butt, was tied to the roots of the world-tree by the other Gods, and his struggles cause earthquakes.
If we choose to believe that, does it make us morons any more than saying the reason there is a rainbow after a storm is because God is promising never again to flood the world? We all know the truth - suspended water droplets cause refraction, that creates the rainbow of visible light we see.

BUT - there is room for God in the equation. You could say “God arranged for this light refraction as a reminder he will never again flood the earth. You could also say God created the world, and let animals evolve according to his plan.
Einstein himself once said about the complexity of the universe, was “What really interests me is whether God had any choice in the creation of the world?”

The bible is part history, part mythology, and intelligent people can seperate it into the two, while still understanding the book did not fall to the ground complete, from heaven. It was written by the ever so slightly fallible hand of man.

Many religions have come and gone. It would be very interesting to come back in ten thousand years and see what people are believing. Will the Big Three still be around? Or will the Bible, the Torah and the Qu’Ran simply be dusty exhibits on a museum shelf, forgotten except by scholars of history and anthropology.

What will the humans of the future believe, and will they think us all morons, as superstitious and silly as the vikings?

My postings do not always reflect my personal beliefs, but I am not so narcissistic that I believe my beliefs are the ones that should be shared by everyone.

Thank you, therealist, for that fine post.
I do wonder if “Churchgoer” meant to say the word ‘reincarnation’ rather than ‘revolution.’ No, I guess he/she meant ‘evolution.’
I am one who has little patience with fundamentalists who belive the Bible is ‘The Word of God,’ (It’s not! Read the whole thing carefully and ask would God write this stuff??)... and that the book is the ‘infallible, inerrant Word of God.’ Only God is infallible…if there is a God….not the Pope or Jesus Christ…and it is not without a mixture of truth and error. It is not a book of science and a lot of the history is full of contradictions and errors. No creationist can explain to me why the book of Genesis has two different creation stories.
As for Albert Einstein, he said, “the Bible is a silly book.”
I would like to recommend Bart Ehrman’s book, “God’s Problem.” He has written 26 books, he is an eminent scholar and he chairs the department of religious studies at UNC. This book deals in depth with how the problem of suffering is handled in the texts of the Bible. In the conclusion, he explained his frustration with keeping his faith, says he has lost it through his studies, and no longer goes to church.
When the hymn “Silent Night, Holy Night” is sung, I choke on the words “round yon virgin mother and child.” The story of the virgin birth, which was added to the Gospel of Luke 300 years later, is a myth!
There are passages of the Bible that I enjoy reading as a source of strength and comfort, but it is a book not to be taken as literaly true. Christianity was born with the arrival of Jesus, and the message he brought was how to live life honorably, justly, and with love for all mankind and God’s creatures.
Did any of you see Dr. Brian L. Weiss when he was on the Oprah show two days in a row last year? I have the dvd of those shows. PM me if you want a copy.

The Virgin Birth is not without its problems. Mary giving birth to Jesus, as a Virgin, is very important to the whole Christian Mythos. However, Jesus’ ‘soul’ had to come from somewhere, so to me the question of his Earthly parents isn’t an issue. Maybe God posessed Joseph when the deed occurred? Even if she WAS a virgin, Half of Jesus’ DNA would have come from Mary, so he was at least partially human.
The more likely explanation is that the Hebrew word for virgin - meaning “never had sex”, is the SAME word for “first time mother”, so the passage COULD refer to the fact it was Mary’s first child, and not a true miracle.
Parthenogenesis could also explain the virgin birth, however it is rarely observed naturally in mammals. It is a process where animals (especially lower beasts like insects and reptiles) will reproduce without sex, spontaneously. Eggs divide on their own, producing offspring. In higher order animals, on the rare occaision it happens, it usually occurs with abnormalities.
Of course, if the Maury show is any indication, young girls who find themselves unexpectantly “in a family way” would never lie. Ever.
