Hartsville Hangs On

Posted by sherryfm on 11/14 at 11:12 AM

There is a little coverage of the game on the Friday Night blitz video on SCNow.com at 4:50 into the video.  I couldn’t find any coverage of South Florence’ loss to North Western on Thursday night.  If you didn’t hear, the score was North Western 53 - South Florence 0.

The reason I bring this up?  South Florence gave Hartsville a good fight just a few weeks ago when Hartsville defeated them 27-20.  Next week, Hartsville will meet North Western in the playoffs.  I hope they fare better than South Florence.  I detest shutouts in high school playoff games.

There were 11 shutouts this week in the state high school playoff games.  There were also 10 blowouts.  (Games where the losing team lost by 21 points or more).  What is the explanation for so much disparity in team pairings?

Nobody likes to watch a team get slaughtered.  It is much more fun and more memorable to see a close nail-biter type game than to see some of the best teams in the state get creamed.  Just sayin.

Check any tournament.  That is the way it usually works.  Top seed plays the last seed in the first round.  NCAA basketball tournament is a great example.  Great games are usually the closest seeded games.  Nice to see that the red foxes came home with a “W” despite being down 3 players due to suspension.

Too many teams make the playoffs in high school sports in South Carolina. When a first round matchup is an undefeated team against a team with a losing record you usually get a blow out.

I know the thinking is that the more teams that make the playoffs the more revenues at the gate, but realistically how many fans (besides parents) of a team with a losing record would travel a great distance to watch a non competitive game?

I think only the winner of a Region and the runner-up should qualify in all sports.

Lisa, thanks for adding those directions, but have you ever tried the 903/Hwy521/Hwy 9 to I-77 route?

I take a left onto 903 10 miles past McBee, turn right onto 521 at Lancaster and go straight on this road.  It becomes Hwy 9, which has access to I-77 up at Richburg.  I take I-77 North to exit 77, which is Hwy 21 (Cherry Road).

I’ve traveled both routes many times, both are about the same distance and time, but traffic is usually better and the route is less confusing to go 903 to 521/9 for me anyway.

Growing up in Chester, I had the misfortune of attending many games at Northwestern.  Most of them were excruciating to watch if you are not a Northwestern fan.  Good luck to the Red Foxes!
