Hartsville Idol

Posted by rob odom on 05/21 at 06:20 PM

I am looking forward to the 2010 Hartsville Idol, as are many of my friends.  We had a great time last year.
I am concerned about some of the things I read in the SCNow article.
Why is the city not allowing coolers?  I never noticed any incidents last year that would lead to this.
Did I misunderstand how the seating will be set up?  are we gonna have to sit in rows?
Just wondering.  Thoughts or comments?

As I understand it, these steps were taken because of the large crowds anticipated downtown for Hartsville Idol II. Hartsville Idol sponsors have met with police and others in charge of crowd safety to come up with a plan to ensure the safety of contestants and spectators.
I don’t think the coolers were an issue last year. These are preventive measures.
It will be necessary for people to sit so there are clear walking paths so that if an emergency was to arise it could be taken care of immediately.

We had a great time last year and anticipate the same this year.  But the main draw for us was the “unorganized atmosphere.”  Maybe the front area, say for about 75 feet could be in rows and in the back, we could be as we were.

Im sure the cooler thing has more to do with money thsn “potential problems”. I can almost guarantee someone will be out there selling watery, overpriced pepsi (not Coke like real men drink), and complained to the organziers “Hey I’ll be able to sell a whole lot more watery overpriced pepsi if you ban coolers”.
Not me - I’ll keep a cooler in my car and walk back and forth, just on priciple. It didnt say “no outside drinks”, only “no coolers”.
Im sure someone else said “Someone might bring BEER in a cooler”, to which others replied, “oh GOD no - we can’t have someone enjoy a BEER!”
I say - alow coolers - but tell the cops that will be working the thing to watch out for people acting stupid. That works better for me.

Or maybe they are just thinking “this thing was too crowded last year - lets piss people off and maybe the crowds will be smaller”. That seems to be the Hartsville way.

The City of Hartsville banded the coolers due to the inforcement and patroling for alochol. It was not the vendors who sell drinks or the organizers who complained.  Those who want to bring in a drinks and food can and will… and those who choose to support the vendors and sponsers who have paid $ to make this event possible I’m sure they would say thank you!!! If you want to drink before the show or after… why not have a drink at one of your downtown business like Bizzles or Applebees or JMichaels… Even thought they may not be a direct sponser, this event was to help bring people to the downtown…Just a thought

HARTSVILLE IDOL WAS GREAT!!!!!  After a few minor glitches, the sound system was much better, too.  The judges were more honest with their comments, but did tend to ramble on from time to time. For the next seven weeks or so, Burry Park is the Saturday night place to be.

I agree. Not as bad as I thought. Except for the singing. Woo wee!
The cooler thing became a non issue for me. I just left the cooler in the car and walked back to get my COKE. Not beer, or worse, pepsi.
Ill have to get my wife to bring her “movie purse” (you know - the giant purse you empty out and fill with goodies before going to the theater?) next time full of foodstuffs.
They didnt seem to be enforcing a no blanket rule, although I would hate to get stuck behind some of the people with giant umbrellas or the beach sun/windscreen. I think most of those went down when the singing started, though.
The judges were honest this time. I’d like to see more simon cowell style “was that a serious audition?” comments, but at least they arent sugar coating it.
I’ll be back.

Yeah…sorry about the sound glitches.  Because the Tea Party rally (which originally was supposed to be on the other end of the park), and then a half hour rainstorm, we weren’t able to do the proper sound checks ahead of time.  All that should be worked out this week.

The comment about the sound problems was a back door compliment, compared to last year when it was a constant problem.  I think everything went very well.  Since we got the sound fixed, can we do something about the air conditioning?  I don’t think it was working very well.
