SAN ANTONIO, TX. - Jordan Lyles hurled the first complete game of his professional career Tuesday night in San Antonio, leading the Hooks to a 3-1 win over the Missions to even this series at a game apiece.
The victory allows the Hooks (20-18) to keep pace with first-place Frisco in the Texas League South. Corpus Christi remains one game out.
Lyles (4-2) spotted the Missions a 1-0 lead in the first. He walked Cedric Hunter with two outs and served up a slicing RBI double into the left field corner off the bat of Matt Clark. That was it for the Missions, who would not advance a runner past second the rest of the evening.
The 19-year-old right-hander sprayed four hits and a walk while striking out five. He threw one wild pitch, which allowed Brad Chalk to reach in the eighth after Chalk had struck out swinging. Lyles allowed just one hit from the fourth inning on and threw a total of 96 pitches.
Tuesday’s game pitted the top pitching prospects from each organization, and Missions’ starter Simon Castro was no slouch. The 21-year-old Dominican native was perfect through three and two-thirds innings.
Corpus Christi’s 12th batter of the night, Koby Clemens, sullied the perfecto, the no-hitter and shutout all in one swing of the bat. He crunched a 3-2 pitch from Castro over the wall in left-center for his 10th home run of the year and a 1-1 score.
Castro allowed just one run on three hits but was removed after five full innings. The Hooks scored the decisive runs in the sixth off reliever Alexis Lara (0-1).
Wladimir Sutil opened the sixth with a single to right and went to third on J.B. Shuck’s hit-and-run single to center. Lara fanned Clemens, but Jimmy VanOstrand drilled a single to left to plate Sutil for a 2-1 Corpus Christi lead.
Jon Gaston walked to load the bases for German Duran, whose single to center brought Shuck home for a 3-1 score.
Shuck finished the evening 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Gaston, who singled in the fifth, has now hit safely in six straight.
Game three of the series is slated for Wednesday night at 7:05. Jeremy Johnson (0-2) takes on San Antonio’s Wynn Pelzer (4-3).
