Mack Chosen To Lead Lady Foxes Varsity Basketball Team
(May 13, 2011)—Hartsville High School announced today that Tammy Gibson Mack, former star player for the Hartsville High Lady Foxes and NC State University, will be the new head girls’ varsity basketball coach for the Lady Foxes.
Mack, a 10-year coaching veteran, most recently served as the head girls’ varsity coach at Lamar High School. Before taking over the varsity spot in Lamar, she was the junior varsity girls’ coach at Hartsville High School for three years. She was also the junior varsity head coach and a varsity assistant for three years at McBee High School before serving as the head women’s coach at Columbia College during the 2004-05 season.
Coach Mack had an outstanding prep and collegiate playing career. She was an All-Region player for the Lady Foxes for four years, was named to the All-State team for three years, was team MVP during her junior and senior seasons, played in the North-South All-Star game as a senior, and was also named a McDonald’s All-American in 1989-90. She made the All-ACC freshman team at NC State, was second team All-ACC during her junior and senior seasons, and was team MVP during her senior year for the Lady Wolfpack.
In making the announcement, Hartsville High principal Dr. Charlie Burry said, “We’re extremely excited to have a former Lady Red Fox come back home to coach our girls’ basketball team. Tammy played for two legendary coaches - Pat Hewitt at Hartsville High and Kay Yow at NC State - so she certainly has learned from the best. She has a first-hand understanding of the Coach Hewitt’s philosophy, and is committed to continuing our winning tradition as well as the high quality of character and class that have always been trademarks of our program.”
Mack is the daughter of Henry Gibson and Delores Patterson, is married to James Mack, and has an eight-year-old daughter, Taleah Stephens. Coach Mack replaces Coach Pat Hewitt, who retired at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season after compiling an iconic 42-year teaching and coaching career at Hartsville High School.
