The Darlington County School District is beginning preparations for the 2011-12 school year with the registration of children for the four-year-old child development program and the five-year-old kindergarten program. Registration for these students will be held on Friday, April 1, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. at the primary and elementary school sites. Parents are asked to bring the following information when registering their child:  1) birth certificate; 2) current immunization record; 3) social security card; and 4) proof of residence (utility bill, phone bill, property tax receipt, etc.).

The four-year-old child development program for the Darlington County School District is a district and state-funded program for children in Darlington County who will be four-years-old on or before September 1, 2011.  Cain Elementary, Pate Elementary, St. John’s Elementary, Lamar Elementary and Southside Early Childhood Center offer half-day programs.  Transportation is provided.  Children who register for the program will go through a screening using the state approved screening instrument DIAL-3 (Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning-Revised).  4K teachers at designated locations in Hartsville, Darlington, and Lamar will conduct screenings on an appointment basis.

Due to the limited number of slots available, children are selected for participation in the four-year-old child development program based on the DIAL-3 assessment.  All children who are not placed during the initial screening process are placed on a waiting list in rank order according to their DIAL-3 scores from lowest to highest.  As slots become available during the year, students are accepted into the program from that waiting list according to rank.

Parents may register a child for the four-year-old child development program if the child will be four-years-old on or before September 1, 2011. Registration for the four-year-old child development program will be held on April 1, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the following locations:
•In Darlington at Cain Elementary, Pate Elementary, and St. John’s Elementary
•In Hartsville at Southside Early Childhood Center
•In Lamar at Lamar Elementary
•In Society Hill at Rosenwald Elementary & Middle School

The five-year-old kindergarten program for Darlington County School District is a state mandated program for all children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2011 in accordance with state law.  This is a full day program for all students and all children who register will be placed.

Parents of children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2011 and who are not currently enrolled in a school in Darlington County School District, may register the children for five-year-old kindergarten at the following locations:
•In Darlington at Cain Elementary, Pate Elementary, and St. John’s Elementary
•In Hartsville at Southside Early Childhood Center
•In Lamar at Lamar Elementary
•In Society Hill at Rosenwald Elementary & Middle School

Rosenwald Elementary & Middle School is an enrollment site but the school does not offer 4K kindergarten classes. Students who register at Rosenwald will need to attend 4K kindergarten at another school site in the district.

Parents who have additional questions or need more information concerning registration may contact their local school or the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at 398-2224.
