Shocking Weather

Shocking Weather

We southerners can handle a little cold weather, but this is ridiculous.  Life can get rather challenging when experiencing sub-normal temperatures for this many days in a row.  I’ll bet even relocated northerners are wishing for milder temps.

I have learned a few valuable lessons for dealing with this weather.  Feel free to add your own advice.

I have learned that it is not a good idea to leave a water bottle in the car in this weather.
My stash of Deer Park water has frozen under the seat of my car.

There is the issue of ‘warming up’ the car.  I am no primadonna, but apparently, my transmission is. I don’t really care if the car is a little cold, but I have noticed that my car performs way better if it has had a five minute warm-up in this chill.

As far as cars go, I won’t bore you with the details, but radiators will let you down in this weather.  And check your tires.  Improperly inflated tires will split if you hit a sharp object in the cold.

My least favorite thing about cold weather is the shock factor.  It seems that I am a walking stun gun.  I have to really be careful to transfer the current before touching the cat or my kids.  They don’t take well to being zapped.

I have found that keeping one hand on the metal door jamb of the car as I slide across the seat releases the electric charge into the metal. The same thing works inside when taking off your coat/fleece/sweater.  Use a doorway to release the charge.  If you can keep one hand on the doorway while you pull your arm out of the sleeve, it prevents most zaps.

I still have to be careful of getting up out of my computer chair and going straight to the microwave.  If I don’t remember to hold on to the door frame while I stand up, I get sparks coming from my fingertips when I touch the microwave to grab my reheated coffee.

Listening to my cd player while folding warm laundry is really not a good idea.  Being shocked by earbuds is a traumatic experience.

Also, always touch your honey before you lean in for a kiss.  Shocked lips are a real turnoff for both of you.

Stay warm!

smile  I loved this, Sherry!!  I can just imagine you shocking your poor kitty cat.  Thanks for writing such great reminders of inflating the tires and letting the car warm up a bit.

As many of you know, I love this time of year and have enjoyed seeing the sparkly frost on my windshield, wearing scarves and mittens, and most importantly, observing the beauty of the fountain at First Presbyterian Church on Home Avenue…photos coming soon!

I have surprisingly really enjoyed the recent cold snap.  Granted, I don’t have to work in it!  I love bundling up and walking through the woods on a cold day, dogs running ahead looking back periodically to make sure I’m still around.  Simple pleasures afforded to us by nature.  Looking forward to possible snow tonight!

Thanks for the comments!
I like the cold when it is sunny like it is today, but I am hoping for snow, too.  It would be awesome to have it snow in the daytime so that we could watch it fall.
I saw the fountain at First Presbyterian this morning, and it looks spectacular!

Thanks for adding the fountain video Jana.

I never saw a flake last night.  Did anyone stay up and keep watch?

I woke up at 5am and almost cried when I wasn’t snowed in for the day.

Up at 3am to check on snow accumulation and was completely bummed.  But enjoyed the two hour school delay anyway!

Humidity will reduce shocks in your home…..fill your bath tub or leave it filled after soaking…it will evaporate into the air.  We use a humidifier in the winter months.  YOu can also just leave pots of water sitting out around in places that won’t get knocked over…old flower vases work well too.  I put my tin tea kettle on the wood burning insert too..just remember to keep filling it back up as the water level goes down.

I had not thought about the humidity level.  Good ideas, ucmba97.  This dry heat from the Trane units is tough on the skin and hair too.  I’ll try adding moisture to see if that helps.

I was glad to see the cold snap affecting the nation. Takes some of the fire out of the Global Warming conspiracy.

I’ve known the car door trick for years - my child is just learning it, she screams every time she gets out. It’s a self-correcting error - sooner or later she’ll learn.

Cranking a cold engine is one of the worst things you can do to it, of course, we all have to do it. The engine is warm enough to drive away within a minute or so, but let it run for five minutes or so if it’s below freezing and your transmission will thank you. Mine lets me know if its still too cold - it wont shift out of 3rd, which I understand is a common trait of my brand.

I just wish it would snow. A lot. Like three feet.

Bubba has declared himself as a pro using static electricity, but that electrical shock he generates is much less lethal than the biological warfare he is known to use.  It just adds to his Pine Ridge charm.
