Sonoco defeats The Masons 10-8
The Masons had hoped to clinch the second half playoff game and season championship in the Dixie Youth Baseball Minor League at Byerly Park Friday night, but Sonoco had other things in mind. Sonoco upset the Masons 10-8 for the second half championship forcing a best of three series beginning 5:30 p.m. Monday to decide the season champs.
In the fourth inning, Sonoco was ahead 5-4. A.J. Joyner tripled; another runner walked onto first. Then, Biggie Cassidy drove both runners home, making the game 7-4 with no outs.
The Masons put Seth Young on the mound to change the momentum, but, when the catcher lost the ball, Cassidy sneaked home bringing the score to 8-4.
Confusion continued as a runner at third saw the second out, thought it was the third and headed toward the dugout. His teammates shouted him back on the field, and miscues on defense allowed two more runners to head home, making it 10-4.
Sonoco loaded the bases, and with two minutes left in the game a runner walked one home, making it 10-5 before The Masons retook the field.
The Masons loaded the bases, and a hit to the infield missed by the first baseman allowed three runners to score, making it 10-8 with less than a minute to go. With two outs, the man at third tried to make it home but was tagged out in the final seconds of the game.
“We just ran out of time,” Mason Head Coach Larry Quick said.
The Masons were the champions of the first half of the season.
The best of three series will be held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, if needed, at Byerly Park.
