Strip Clubs in Hartsville?

Posted by Bonnie Odey on 12/22 at 09:55 AM

The headline in the Messenger this week was something like city approves “adult business ordinance.”  I didn’t read the article but I guess that means Hartsville will be getting a red light district.  Those things should be left to the big cities.

I don’t think a red light district would hurt Hartsville at all.  All those stores that are closing on Main Street they could put the street walkers in the store windows like they do in that one city in Europe. That way they would keep them off the street and that would give the people of Hartsville something to do Saturday night.  They could shop the red light district.  That would also give all the pastors something new to sermonize about instead of the same old boring sermons Sunday after Sunday - year after year.

I believe they were trying to pass zoning to prohibit or at least zone them to certain areas, but I got the feeling that they can only do so much before someone would start yelling about free speech.

My question is…is there a big demand for strip clubs in this area?  didn’t they try that out on 151 a while back….

I’m guessing there is someone wanting to open something along the lines of “seductive clothing, etc” like Ssssshhhh (or whatever it’s called in florence or darlington, i heard a radio ad for it during valentines).

Mayor Pennington says:

Dear friends,
We have been working hard to ensure that we constitutionally address this issue and don’t infringe on anyone’s pursuit of happiness.  The ordinance will restrict any adult oriented business so that it cannot operate within a certain distance of a school, playground, church, etc…  Keep in mind that we cannot regulate or zone these businesses out of existence; however, we want to make certain that we protect the integrity and quality of life in Hartsville.  It is the right thing to protect future business development and growth.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve,

Mel Pennington
Mayor, City of Hartsville

A vibrant city caters to all of its citizens.  But I agree, keep it out of downtown and away from our children.

You can tell a lot about a city by the way it treats the non-wealthy.  Keep up your defenses against the CAVE people! (Citizens Against Virtually Everything)
