Suggestions, abstracts, etc.

We won’t create a suggestion forum for now - too many other pressing things - but if you would be so kind as to add a comment to this message, I will see it in my e-mail.

The Abstract box has been a bit confusing. What do we put in int.

Well, try to put a one- or two-line summary of your story there. It turns out the RSS feed pulls from that abstract. We’ll see about a fuller RSS feed, but for now, the abstract is important, it turns out.

Doug,

The abstract is also important for the individual category pages.  As you can see here:

How about a spell check or at least whatever that is that will underline a mis spelled word. Spelling never was a strong suit of mine. I can catch most of my mistakes, but not always. Not just for me, others might like it too.

I’d like in Photos section, the person that posted the pics be identified. Someone like Jana should get credit for all her great photographs.

Kingfish, a spell check is something that will take a little time to develop, but rest assured that providing formatting options within the posting page is on the list of things to-do.

Mantl7fan, that is a great suggestion! I have implemented it this morning, when you click on an image you will now see the posters username (For images posted from now on.)

You guys are doing a great job. It’s fun watching things develop and change. It’s kinda like raising a child. Every once in while you will need to change the diaper, but it will grow and get better. Keep up the good work.

Just a couple suggestions to alleviate annoyances:

1. First and foremost, ditch the ads. If this is a “research” site, they have no place here. Yes, I know someone has to pay for this, but they are even more annoying on here than on a commercial site (where I sort of expect them).

2. Fix the code so that the CSS styles load sooner or faster. Seeing the white page of text before the page resolves isn’t good. This happens in all browsers and severely slows the page load.

How about on the old site, users had a photo beside there name when they posted.

Also how about a way to delete your comment.  I just realized on a post I mispelled and it makes me look stupid.

Matt and I are monitoring these and will see what we can do. Tim, even on the old system you could not delete your comment.

We are working on various photo issues. First is to get it so photos can be embedded in the text posts. Matt and I have talked about the user photo/avatar situation, but I’m not sure we’ll be able to hack that.

The ads are here to stay. They were always part of the old site, too; it’s just that Osteen, and then Media General in the transition, did not sell them. We had a front-page banner and, if you remember the first ad from a satellite company, side rail ad positions. Most of the inside ones just never got used, so you didn’t see they were there.

While this has been a “research” site, part of that research has been how a small paper can integrate such sites into its mix. To do that, they have to bring in some revenue.
