The Hartsville Veterans Memorial Dedication & Flag Raising Ceremony
The Hartsville Veterans Memorial Dedication & Flag Raising Ceremony was held in Burry Park on November 11, 2010 at 11:00 am.
The Veterans Memorial is dedicated to the soldiers who served America during the Twentieth Century. The number five is shown as symbolism for the five conflicts, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf War- and the five branches of service. The bas relief bronze monuments are clad in architectural cast stone placed in a pentagon shape. Each monument is a collage of events with detailed representation of military uniforms, weapons and symbolism of each conflict. on the ground surrounding the memorial are black granite bars separated by bronze medallions from the branches of the armed services. The flag pole in the center is in honor of the men and women who served or gave of their lives in service to their country.
The sculptor of the memorial is Charlie Pate, a Hartsville native. He is an honor graduate of Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL. Charlie is the son of Catherine and Gerald Pate of Hartsville. Charlie’s son, Charles, assisted his father in creating this beautiful memorial.
