The Messenger has new editor
From staff reports
Bob Sloan, a veteran journalist with more than two decades of experience in the newspaper business, began work Monday as editor of The Hartsville Messenger.
Sloan, who most recently worked as editor/general manager of The Cheraw Chronicle & The Chesterfield Advertiser in Cheraw, replaces Lisa Chalian-Rock. Chalian-Rock resigned last month to begin work as editor of The News & Press in Darlington.
“I am elated to assume the leadership of the newsroom at The Messenger,” Sloan said. “After having lived in Hartsville for more than a year, I have fallen in love with this gem of a town. Hartsville has so much to offer and deserves to have a quality newspaper it can call its own.”
Originally from Hampton, Va., Sloan is a graduate of The University of Virginia at Wise in Wise, Va., with a Bachelor’s Degree in English.
Along with The Cheraw Chronicle, he has also held positions at The Charlotte Observer, The Robesonian in Lumberton, N.C., The Anson Record in Wadesboro, N.C., and The Daily Press-Times-Herald in Newport News, Va.
Sloan is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
“I am very much looking forward to working with Ardie Arvidson, Jim Faile and the rest of the newspaper staff to put The Messenger in the top echelon of community newspapers in the state,” Sloan said.
“We will utilize our web site and whatever resources are available to us through our sister newspapers in the Pee Dee region and with Media General, Inc., to provide Hartsville with timely and accurate news coverage.”
Sloan is an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville. He is married to Kelly Boone-Sloan, Director of Christian Education at First Presbyterian. He has two daughters from a previous marriage, Tracy Ann and Amanda Jean.
