The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) will serve as a host site for the popular summer enrichment program “Camp Invention.” This unique day camp will be held July 26-30, 2010, for students entering grades one through six.

Darlington County School District will operate on a two-hour delay tomorrow, January 8, 2010. Staff and students should report to school two hours later than normal.
The decision to close schools in Darlington County School District for bad weather such as snow, sleet, extreme wind and rain, or other dangerous weather conditions is a decision carefully made by school officials. The safety of approximately 11,000 students is the primary determining factor to open or close the schools.
Seventeen Darlington County School District students have qualified as Junior Scholars this year as part of a State Department of Education program designed to encourage talented middle school students in South Carolina.
Charles Govan has been appointed to the Property and Casualty (P&C) Board of Directors of the South Carolina School Boards Insurance Trust by the South Carolina School Boards Association. Govan, a member of the Darlington County Board of Education, will represent school boards and replaces Leni Patterson who resigned.

The Darlington County Board of Education approved the 2010-11 school district calendar at their December board meeting.
Seven Darlington County School District teachers earned National Board Certification this year, bringing the district total to approximately 75 teachers. The seven teachers are among 799 South Carolina teachers to earn the certification this year, according to information released this week by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards ®.

Two Darlington County Schools are among the U.S. News & World Report’s fourth annual ranking of “America’s Best High Schools”. Mayo High School for Math, Science & Technology in Darlington earned a Silver rating for the third year in a row. Lamar High School in Lamar earned their first spot on the list this year with a Bronze rating.

In 1949 Carolina Elementary School in Hartsville first opened its doors to educating children. This year the school celebrates its 60th anniversary.
