Common questions and answers about the new site
FAQ1: Will I have to reregister.
Yes. Doug will have to go in and approve them. It will be fairly routine, but the e-mail notifying Doug of new members continues to be a problem, so he has to try to find time every couple of days to go in and hit the "yes" button. Sorry about this, but there was no way to restore the old list.
FAQ2: Will I be able to edit my posts and comments?
For now, you will not be able to edit your posts. Matt is working on code so that you will be able to edit. The system we are using, Expression Engine, was not designed for usage quite as robust as Drupal, so Matt has to do some hacking around.
Comments, as with Drupal, will never be editable. However, I will still be able to delete those that are beyond the terms of service, libelous or beyond the bounds of taste.
FAQ3: Can I insert links, etc.?
Yes, and you won't need to know HTML. Put the link in using the full url (including http://), and the system should recognize it and make it a link without the need for any html
FAQ4: Images, where do I post them?
You post them in the images section, which has topics that correspond to the topics in the forum section. However, you won't be able to immediately embed the image the form post.
FAQ5: If I can't embed the image, what can I do?
While, for now, you can't embed images in posts, you can link to the image.
- Go to photo gallery, click on image you want
- When bigger version comes up, right click on image. Choose "view"
- When the image comes up in view mode in your browser, copy the link and paste it back to your blog.
Yeah, it's cumbersome. We're working to make it easier.
FAQ6: Where's the community calendar?
It is not here at the moment; we decided it was better to get the site up and open then wait till everything was in place. Matt is developing that module.
FAQ7: What do I do if I can't remember my username or password (or both) or I want to change my username or screen name?
Doug will not be able to help you as much as in the past because Expression Engine has some different restrictions on user names and passwords:
-Once you have registered a user name, you cannot change it.
-If you need more than one account, say for different members of a family, you must create separate accounts for each user with separate e-mails.
-You can go into your account profile and change your screen name. You will have to remember, however, to use the old user name to log on.
-You can reset your password, but Doug cannot.
-If you want to make any of those changes, you can do so in your account settings, but you will need your current password.
-If you lose your password, there is a password recovery link that will send a message to the e-mail you enter.
-If you have lost your user name and password, you will need to e-mail Doug, who will then have to forward it on to Media General to be reset.
Doug also no longer has an administrative log where he can look at activity on the system and tell when someone is having problems, so it has to be up to you to let him know.
If there is something missing you think we need or a problem you think we should address, let Doug know.
